Chicago is a city that is made up of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood will have its own character. You rent cost is going to depend on what neighborhood you live in. Living close to downtown will be safer, and cleaner, but of course that is going to cost you a bit more.
Most of the residents located in Lakeview tend to be college students. However, there are some older working class people that live in this area. In this area, you will find lots of restaurants, shops, clubs, and bars. Along with that comes congestion. It will be crowded and very hard to find parking. With that being said public transportation is available to this area.
If you are looking for some peace and quiet, then this is going to be the place for you. Mostly older folks live here, but this area is going to be more expensive. There are lots of parks and recreational areas for you to visit including the Lincoln Park Zoo. You will also have trouble finding parking in this area.
Near North Side
This area is very convenient for school studies, but it will run you a bit more money. You will also have trouble finding parking in this area. A lot of popular restaurants, night clubs, and comedy clubs are located in this area so you can expect it to be crowded during certain times of the week. There are lots of historic buildings for you to take in as well as lots of art galleries and designer clothing stores.
This is about far north as you can go. It is located right along the lake. In this area, you will find some safe neighborhoods and some not so safe neighborhoods. A lot of students live here because it is close to Loyola University and the rent in this area is fairly cheap.
